The Berkeley Box honors Norborne Berkeley, Lord Botetourt, next-to-last royal governor of Virginia, who was greatly beloved by Virginians, even during the trying times leading to the American Revolution. As a fashionable Londoner before his move to Williamsburg, Lord Botetourt would have been familiar with the designs of Thomas Chippendale, whose first-edition pattern book, held in Colonial Williamsburg's collections, inspired this jewelry box.
